Buying a Plasma TV – What to look for

Buying a Plasma TV means looking beyond the brand, and deciding which product to buy based on one's requirements. Buying one purely because the brand is a well known one might easily turn out to be a bad decision, since each TV has its own strengths and weaknesses. Following is a list of some of the features that need to be taken care of.

·         Glare – Buying Plasma TVs is a wise decision only when the room in which they are to be placed is a dark one, since they have a shiny surface, and keeping a plasma in a room with bright light can easily reduce the viewing pleasure, since the glare from the surroundings will be reflected on the screen.

·         Resolution – A plasma TV must have at least 720 or 1080 vertical lines of resolution. If the TV is to receive HD TV signals, or connect with a Blu-Ray player, then a 1080p TV is the best choice. This can be validated by visiting a shop and asking the retailer to play a Blu-Ray disc and seeing the display on a 720 and 1080p screen.

·         Contrast Ratio – A Plasma TV having a high contrast ratio will produce more realistic images. The lowest contrast ratio is 800:1, while the latest Plasma TVs offer a ratio up to 30,000:1

Plasma TV buying guide – Know the details

Following are some of the most important considerations for selecting a plasma television.

·         Screen size is the most basic consideration for buying a plasma TV. One needs to ensure that the viewing distance is at least 2-3 times the size of the screen.
·         The best plasma TV would have a contrast ratio of 10000:1, a panel life of approximately 60,000 hours (although more would certainly be better) and a progressive scan resolution of 1920X1080 pixels.
·         If a plasma TV is labelled as 'HDTV compatible' or 'HDTV ready', that does not mean it's having an in-built HDTV tuner.
·         If a plasma TV is labelled as a monitor, it would not have speakers, which means that the buyer would have to make arrangements for external sound.
·         Talking of sound, it is a point to be noted that sometimes, it's much better to go for external sound options in case the buyer wants to include the television in a home theatre style of setup. However, if the screen is to be used on a standalone basis, in-built speakers would do just fine.
·         Last but not the least, flat wall mount plasma TVs are much more economical compared to other kinds. These are directly attached to the wall. Other options include a tilt wall mount, where the TV is placed high on a wall and can be angled according to the viewer's choice, and a table stand, which is the traditional style of keeping a television.
